I finally got around to upgrading to WordPress 2.7 (beta 3) so I could make sure Tango Smileys Extended would be compatible.

WELL, IT IS!!!

Users of TSE can feel comfortable in upgrading to WordPress 2.7 without fear of TSE breaking. I’ve had a few issues with some of the other plugins I use, but TSE has been behaving as it should.
